THE BIRTH OF BOP“ zelebriert das bleibende Erbe des frühen Bop-Katalogs von Savoy Records mit Titeln von Jazzgrößen wie Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Allen Eager und Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. „THE BIRTH OF BOP“ erscheint am 31. März als 5x 10" Vinyl und 2-CD-Set bei Concord/Universal. Die Mastering und Audio-Restaurierung erfolgte durch Joe Tarantino. Die neuen Liner Notes über die Geschichte des Bop und die Rolle des legendären Labels Savoy verfasste der GRAMMY®-gekrönte Autor Neil Tesser. Das Set bietet damit sowohl eine Einführung als auch ein Lehrstück über die Ursprünge des Bop.

Als der Bop in den 1940er Jahren entstand, herrschte noch die Big-Band-Swing-Musik vor. Die jungen Musiker, die diese neue Musik förderten, bildeten noch einen kleinen Kreis in der Jazzwelt. Daher arbeiteten diese Musiker oft in Gruppen unter dem Namen des anderen zusammen, schließlich hatten sie noch keinen großen Pool an Mitspielern. Auch waren die Plattenfirmen, die sich auf den Bop einließen, anfangs noch unbekannter. Das Label Savoy, das Ende 1942 gegründet wurde, war einer dieser großartigen Wegbereiter. Ihr Produzent Teddy Reig war in jener Zeit als Gauner und leidenschaftlicher Musikfan eine schillernde Figur, der sich in den Clubs herumtrieb, jüngere, aufstrebende Musiker - darunter Charlie Parker und Dizzy Gillespie – entdeckte und sich mit Jazzkünstlern anfreundete.
